The Interventional Radiology Society of Australasia (IRSA) is proud to announce the publication of its landmark document — the White Paper on Clinical Practice in Interventional Radiology.
Developed through a rigorous, collaborative process led by the IRSA Executive and informed by member consultation, this White Paper establishes clear, evidence-based recommendations to guide best practice in clinical interventional radiology (IR) across Australia and New Zealand.
This important publication provides a framework for hospitals, health services, and interventional radiologists to deliver patient-centred, longitudinal clinical care that meets the standards set by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) and the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE).
Purpose and Impact
The White Paper defines what modern clinical IR practice looks like — moving beyond procedural delivery to full-spectrum, clinician-led care from consultation through follow-up. It highlights key recommendations including:
Allocation of full clinical privileges and hospital admission rights for interventional radiologists;
Access to dedicated outpatient clinics and inpatient resources;
Direct referral pathways to IR from all clinical specialties and primary care;
Dedicated governance structures, staffing, and infrastructure to support IR-led clinical services.
These recommendations aim to strengthen quality, safety, and patient outcomes across the healthcare system and ensure that interventional radiology continues to evolve as a vital, patient-facing medical specialty.
