IR SPECIALTY RECOGNITION
The RANZCR Interventional Radiology Committee
This committee is represented by RANZCR members that perform procedural radiology and practice in the areas of interventional radiology (IR) and interventional neuroradiology (INR). Since 2017, the committee has worked tirelessly towards achieving two key priorities:
- Seeking specialty recognition for IR and INR as clinical radiology specialties.
- Developing contemporary, best-practice and accredited training pathways for IR and INR.
Laying the groundwork for these priorities involves many areas of work which are necessary to improve clinical practice. These include:
- Publication of the first ever version of the Standards of Practice for Interventional Radiology and Interventional Neuroradiology
- Publication of the Specialist Interventional Radiology and Interventional Neuroradiology Range of Practice
- RANZCR’s support for the CIRSE Standards of Quality Assurance in Interventional Oncology and IASIOS accreditation program.
Specialty and Recognition
Advocating for the specialty of IR is a long and complex process that involves submitting a series of applications to the Medical Board of Australia (MBA) and the Medical Council of New Zealand. In early 2023, RANZCR submitted the first of two applications to the MBA to recognise IR as a NEW field of specialty practice of radiology. This year, the college is working towards an application for New Zealand.
IR Training Program
To complement this work, the IRC together with the IR and INR Training Pathway working group is designing a training pathway that will be built upon the basic interventional skills gained in core clinical radiology training program to offer a seamless, dedicated Fellowship level program for all clinical radiologists who choose to specialise in interventional radiology in Australia and New Zealand.
