International Accreditation System for Interventional Oncology

The International Accreditation System for Interventional Oncology Services (IASIOS) is a groundbreaking initiative that seeks to elevate the quality of care and standardize practices within interventional oncology (IO) worldwide. With a focus on excellence, safety, and reliability, IASIOS has emerged as a pivotal organisation, driving advancements in IO services and enhancing patient outcomes. It is the only accreditation system in the world dedicated to interventional oncology. Since its public launch in 2021, it has become a prominent cross-continental community, bringing together facilities from Australia, Asia, North America, South America, Europe and the Middle East.

The Standards of Quality Assurance

IASIOS is based on the Standards of Quality Assurance in Interventional Oncology, a comprehensive document developed by CIRSE (Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe). These standards provide a global framework for IO services, which facilities strive to achieve as IO becomes an established clinical service. The document is supported by over 40 societies, including IRSA and RANZCR.

The Standards of Quality Assurance are divided into three sections:

1. Staff and Facilities (Standards 1 to 6)

2. Treatment Planning and Delivery (Standards 7 to 9)

3. Safety and Quality (Standards 10 to 13)

At the end of each Standard is a list of required evidence that includes documents or records that the facility needs to be able to provide to demonstrate compliance with the Standards.

The IASIOS Accreditation Pathway

IASIOS separates the Standards into either core or extended requirements:

Core requirements – mandatory requirements necessary to achieve IASIOS accreditation and the status of IASIOS Accredited Centre

Extended requirements – additional requirements necessary to achieve the status of IASIOS Centre of Excellence

IASIOS is a multi-level programme and has three distinct seals: The Enrolled Seal is awarded to all facilities registered with IASIOS and working on implementing necessary changes to their service lines to meet the core criteria required for accreditation listed in the Standards of Quality Assurance; The Accredited Seal is awarded to facilities that have successfully demonstrated they meet the core criteria through the IASIOS application process; The Centre of Excellence Seal is awarded to facilities that meet all criteria, both core and extended, and have been accredited for four years.

IASIOS Annual Benefits Programme

For IO facilities, joining IASIOS offers a multitude of benefits, as IASIOS is also a membership program. The annual benefits program has been expanded to include complimentary registrations for key IO events such as the ECIO and CIRSE congresses. This enables junior members, residents, nurses, radiographers, and technicians to access valuable resources and stay up-to-date with the latest developments in the field.

Moreover, IASIOS membership brings visibility and recognition, with IASIOS hospitals being featured in local newspapers, radio interviews and press. Through shared marketing materials and centre promotions, enrolled and accredited facilities gain exposure on IASIOS’s social media channels and website, enhancing their reach and impact. Referring physicians and patients have testified to increased trust and collaboration in IASIOS centres after enrolment. This acknowledgement reinforces an institution’s commitment to quality care and positions them as reliable and trustworthy service providers.

IASIOS offers a global community, networking opportunities with members from other IO facilities, and the ability to share experiences and learn from one another. The rapid expansion of the IASIOS community has united IO facilities worldwide in their shared mission to elevate global standards of patient care in IO.

Testimonials from hospitals describing their experience with IASIOS accreditation can be found on the dedicated Testimonials page.
