The Interventional Radiology Society of Australasia (IRSA) is pleased to announce the publication of its inaugural Quality Care Guidelines for Renal Tumour Ablation. The evidence-based guidelines provide a framework for delivering high-quality, patient-centred care across Australia and New Zealand, from patient selection through to long-term follow-up.
Key highlights include:
- Cryoablation, microwave ablation and radiofrequency ablation are effective first-line treatments for T1a renal cell carcinoma (≤4 cm), with long-term cancer-specific outcomes comparable to surgery.
- Image-guided renal tumour ablation preserves renal function and is typically associated with a short hospital stay.
- The guidelines provide a consistent benchmark for patient selection, procedural technique and follow-up.
