The Interventional Radiology Society of Australasia (IRSA) is proud to announce the publication of its White Paper on Clinical Practice in Interventional Radiology.
Developed through a rigorous, collaborative process led by the IRSA Executive and informed by member consultation, the White Paper establishes clear, evidence-based recommendations to guide best practice in clinical interventional radiology across Australia and New Zealand.
The document defines modern clinical IR practice — moving beyond procedural delivery to full-spectrum, clinician-led care from consultation through follow-up — and provides a framework for hospitals, health services, and interventional radiologists to deliver patient-centred, longitudinal care.
Key recommendations include:
Full clinical privileges and hospital admission rights for interventional radiologists
Access to outpatient clinics and inpatient resources
Direct referral pathways from all clinical specialties and primary care
Governance structures, staffing, and infrastructure to support IR-led services
Developed through a modified Delphi-style consultation with members and stakeholders, the White Paper represents a strong consensus on the standards needed to support the growth and sustainability of IR clinical practice across Australasia.
