Uterine Artery Embolisation (UAE) – Treatment for Adenomyosis

With adenomyosis, tissue from the lining of the uterus grows into the uterine wall, enlarging the uterus.

Sometimes, adenomyosis may cause heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, severe cramping, pain during intercourse or blood clots that pass during a period. Certain medication can help relieve pain or lessen heavy bleeding, however these are generally not a long term treatment option.

UAE for adenomyosis has a 90% success rate and is an excellent non-surgical option for women who experience this painful condition. The recovery time from a UAE procedure is generally one week and is life-changing for many women, allowing them to obtain relief whilst preserving the uterus uterus and avoiding hysterectomy in the majority of patients.

As part of Adenomyosis awareness week, IRSA member, Dr Eisen Laing, was interviewed by Channel 7 and explains the life changing impact of UAE –
